Aadhaar virtual ID is a 16-digit temporary code which can be used for base authentication. You can provide agencies with a UIDAI virtual ID instead of your base number and can avoid reaching your base details to any other person. You can provide the base virtual ID for your e-KYC in both private and government organizations. This facility has been fully implemented by the UIDAI till 1 June 2018. Virtual ID has been introduced to address the issue of infringement of the base data because it would be almost impossible to track the base number with the virtual ID. Virtual IDs can also be used to download Aadhaar card from UIDAI's online portal.

The 16-digit virtual ID will serve as a security layer in the base database and will cater to the privacy concerns of the people. People can use this base service as replacement of biometric ID in new SIM purchase, SIM replacement, banking facilities, passport etc.

Features of the virtual id

All residents are allowed to generate any number of virtual IDs. The previous VID will be automatically canceled on the new VID generation. This is an alternative option for authentication and KYC services that remains valid for a specific amount or until a user changes it.

This virtual ID is similar to the use of Aadhaar numbers and agencies can not use VID for duplicates. This new VID number will ensure the security and confidentiality of the system base card holders. So far, UIDAI has issued 119 million Aadhaar cards across the country, which need to be protected and maintained.
