National Oral Health Programme

Prior to 1986, sporadic efforts were made to introduce a comprehensive oral health care program. In 1986, these endeavors were concluded at the beginning of the first National Oral Health Policy prepared by the Indian Dental Association.

In 1999, the Ministry of Health Welfare launched the first National Oral Health Care Program on a pilot basis in collaboration with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. The program was implemented in five districts across the country in one district.

In the Eleventh Five Year Plan, from 2007 to 2012, all disease control programs were coordinated under the National Rural Health Mission, under which a token amount was allocated for research and training in oral health.

In the 12th Five Year Plan, in 2012, an allocation was made for the establishment of a National Oral Health Cell in the Ministry of Health Family Welfare.

In 2014, Dr. A specialist group was set up for the Oral Health by Jagdish Prasad, Director General Health Services, and in its current form the National Oral Health Program was launched. Center for Dental Education and Research (CDER), AIIMS, New Delhi serves as the National Excellence Center for the implementation of NOHP.
